Shopify subscription apps compared

Compare four subscription apps by recurring-order workflow, customer controls, bundles and the costs to check before choosing.

Choose the subscription experience you need before comparing apps. A simple replenishment offer, a prepaid gift and a build-your-own box require different rules. These tools manage subscription experiences; their inclusion is not a recommendation of a payment processor.

Choose by your actual offer

For one replenishable product, start with the simplest app that supports your renewal and cancellation policy. For mixed boxes, demonstrate product selection, inventory shortages and delivery rules before deciding. For prepaid gifts, check whether billing and fulfillment schedules can differ. A feature called “bundles” may not implement the exact box workflow you need.

Compare the full subscription cost

Request a written example at your current volume and at twice that volume. Include the base app fee, revenue-based fees, per-order fees, additional storefronts and onboarding. Keep processing costs separate. A lower fixed fee can become more expensive as subscription revenue grows; a sophisticated retention suite may be unnecessary for a small pilot.

Run a migration rehearsal

Use a test subscription to check a renewal, address change, skipped shipment, cancellation and refund. Ask what can be transferred, which customer actions are required and how existing delivery dates are preserved. Export a small sample and confirm the replacement system can read it before moving the whole program.

Measure the result

Track successful renewal orders, cancellation reasons, support contacts per subscriber and staff time spent fixing contracts. Evaluate retained contribution after app, fulfillment and service costs. A vendor’s retention claim is not a forecast for your store.

Questions to take to a demo

Common questions

Does a subscription app replace a payment provider?

No. Subscription management and payment processing are different responsibilities. Check compatibility with your existing setup before choosing an app.

Is the free app always the cheapest option?

Not necessarily. Consider staff work, required features and other operating charges alongside the app fee. Start with a small real-workflow pilot.
